3-6pm GMT 14 November 2020

Unravel the histories of weavers in Bengal and their treatment under British rule in this online interactive workshop. Learn about the complex interwoven Bengali and UK histories of craft and manufacture from Dr Lipi Begum from the London College of Fashion. Hear from Sonia Ashmore, Design Historian and author of Muslin and former research fellow at the V&A, about how this new Indian fabric changed fashion.

The Season of Bangla Drama will introduce you to classical Indian dance mudras (hand gestures). Appreciate the skill and dexterity of the dancers and try your hand at these. See your own hands in a new light and appreciate them.

Keats House Poet in Residence Laila Sumpton will unpick the stories of collection items from Keats House and explore the dark history behind their beauty and craftsmanship and share her creative response to these stories and ideas. You will be encouraged and enabled to shape your own expressions and reactions to these insights into colonial history through poetry.

No prior experience of dance or writing is needed!
All you need is a device and internet connection and something to write with and on.

This is the first workshop in the ‘Poetry Versus Colonialism’ series in the Being Human Festival ‘‘Navigating New Worlds’.
In partnership with: Tower Hamlets; Season of Bangla Drama, Keats House
